Diet in IBD: what to eat, what to avoid, what really matters - evidence based approach
1) Diet should be having plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and complex carbohydrates.
It should contain mono-unsaturated fats in the form of olive oil, nuts and seeds.
Lean proteins should be taken - like
Eggs, fish for the person who eats nonveg and legumes for vegetarians.
2) avoid ultraprocessedfood, sugar and added salt.
3) Fibrous fruits and vegetables will be difficult to digest in patients with intestinal stricture, so advise for them is to
a) Chew food well
b) cook fruits and vegetables to make them softer and less fibrous.
4) There is role of EEN ( exclusive enteral nutrition), CDED ( crohn's disease exclusion diet) and PN ( parenteral nutrition) in specific sets of patients.
5) Regular check up for malnutrition and vitamin deficiency with your doctor and corrections as an when needed.
Diet is very important aspect of IBD - particularly for maintaining remission and remain healthy.
