Upper GI endoscopy (also called gastroscopy) is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through the mouth into the food pipe, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), allowing the doctor to directly examine the lining of these organs.

It's commonly recommended for persistent acidity or reflux, difficulty or pain while swallowing, unexplained weight loss, chronic abdominal pain or bloating, vomiting blood or passing black stools, iron deficiency anemia of unknown cause, or persistent nausea and vomiting.

The patient lies on their left side. A thin, flexible endoscope is gently passed through the mouth and guided down the food pipe into the stomach and duodenum. The camera sends real-time images to a screen, allowing the doctor to examine the lining closely, take biopsies if needed, or perform minor treatments during the same session. The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes.

You should fast (no food or water) for 6–8 hours beforehand, inform the doctor of any blood-thinning medications you're on, arrange for someone to accompany you if sedation will be used, and avoid driving for the rest of the day if sedated.
