How is ERCP performed?

A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth, down through the stomach, and into the first part of the small intestine, where the bile duct opening is located. A contrast dye is injected and X-ray images are taken to visualize the bile and pancreatic ducts. If a blockage or stone is found, the doctor can often treat it in the same session - for example, by removing stones or placing a stent.
